Dangerous Beauty: California's North Coast
On the morning of April 25, 1992, most residents of Ferndale, Calif. were wrapping up a Saturday morning parade. Just north of Ferndale, residents of Arcata and Eureka (two of the bigger towns in California's North Coast region), were waking up to an unusually warm day. Families began heading outdoors to soak up the usually blocked-by-fog sun. In Ferndale, horses in the parade were reportedly spooked by something, but riders assumed it was because of the flags fluttering in the wind.
